Renovating an old, outdated bathroom is one of the best ways to add value to your home, and according to the National Association of Realtor’s (NAR) 2019 Remodeling impact report, bathroom renovation is on the uprise.
Small bathrooms are common in older homes and in big cities. Luckily today, minimalist lifestyle is also on the rise, giving us many different options to improve our small space living, including the bathroom. So, before you grab your hammer, consider these popular essential changes to improve the functionality, storage and aesthetic of your new small bathroom.
Tankless Toilet
This St.Tropez one piece tankless toilets gives a contemporary sleek look that conceals trapways and eliminates the rounded outline of the bowl.
Wall Mounted Toilet
A wall mounted toilet, is beautifully sleek with a modern minimalist design to take up less space. With the Geberit toilet system, the flush plate are the only visible element.
Walk in Shower
Tubs can be difficult to get in and out of, especially for our kupuna (elderly in Hawaiian) with mobility issues. With the growing numbers of baby boomers every year, falls have been a serious issue. Hawai‘i averages 85 deaths from falls per year (EMSIPSB, 2011).
A walk-in shower is one way to open up a tiny bathroom space while helping our kupuna to be independent. Making sure shower access is wide enough and accessible to those using wheelchairs or walkers can make your shower safe without compromising on style. Adding a bench will help those with limited mobility, enjoy a relaxing shower while adding appeal.
Built in Cabinets and Shelves
Built in medicine cabinets add space while looking sleek.
Built in cabinets and shelves are an easy fix to store your bathroom items without compromising on space.
Recessed Bathroom Lights
Good lighting is essential to opening up your tiny bathroom space. Recessed lighting can add style and function that offers a clean, modern look that blends with any style.
Mirrors
Adding large mirrors will open up your tiny bathroom.
Mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light to making the room brighter giving your room a more open feel.
Get Rid of Junk
Keep your bathroom tidy and organized. Everything should have a place, arranged neatly and out of sight. There’s nothing that makes a small space feel cramped more than having too much stuff. A cluttered room equals a smaller room. You can read more on how to tidy your home here.
Set Backs to Expect
Somethings to take into consideration when renovating your bathroom.
- Consider the size of your bathroom
- Cost it will take to do the renovation correctly
- Expect unseen set backs.
Some setbacks are common when renovating your bathroom.
- Uneven walls
- Bad electrical wires
- Mold
- Plumbing that needs replacement
- Termite damage, to name a few.
Many have no clue about the hidden costs of remodeling and some contractors may not advise their clients of these potential costs that may arise during the renovation.
Always plan for having a contingency fund and expect the work you want will cost more than you budgeted for.

I agree Brittney, having a walk-in-shower or shower without doors really opens up the bathroom. Plus it’s great for senior citizens, tubs and step in showers are a tripping hazard. Mahalo for your comment.
